Web Design Meath: How to Track Website Enquiries Properly (GA4) – Stop Guessing What Works

If you are investing in a website or organic SEO, there is one mistake that quietly wastes months of effort: not tracking enquiries properly.

I hear it all the time from Irish service businesses: “We’re getting traffic, but we don’t know what’s actually driving calls.” Or worse, “We think it’s working, but we’re not sure.”

This post shows a simple, practical GA4 setup that tells you what pages and content are generating real enquiries, so your website improvements compound instead of relying on gut feel.

First: what counts as a real enquiry?

For most service businesses in Meath (and across Ireland), enquiries usually happen in three ways:

- A contact form submission
- A tap-to-call click on mobile
- A WhatsApp click (if you use it)

Those are the actions you want to measure. Everything else (scrolls, clicks on random pages, time on site) is supporting information.

The one GA4 event you should use for forms

Google recommends using the generate_lead event for initial lead acquisition like form submissions. That’s exactly what we want for most “Contact us” goals.

GA4 lead event tracking setup concept

The simplest setup (works with Elementor forms)

If your contact form redirects to a thank-you page, you can set up tracking without touching code. This approach is clean because it only fires when a real submission happens.

In GA4, you can create an event based on a page view where the URL matches your thank-you page, and mark that event as a key event.

Google’s own “key event” flow is: Event - Key Event - Conversion.

And there is an official tutorial showing how to create a key event from a thank-you page URL (using generate_lead):

What about clicks (tap-to-call, WhatsApp)?

This is where many local sites miss easy wins. A lot of enquiries happen without a form - people tap your phone number and call. If you’re not tracking that, you’re undercounting results.

GA4 can collect lots of interactions automatically (and through enhanced measurement settings). It’s worth knowing what you’re already collecting before adding more.

For tap-to-call and WhatsApp clicks, the most reliable approach is usually a small tag setup (Google Tag Manager) to send a simple click event when someone clicks a tel: or WhatsApp link. GA4 supports setting up events via GTM or the Google tag, depending on how your site is configured.

Why this matters for SEO and web design in Meath

When you can see exactly which pages generate enquiries, your SEO becomes focused and profitable.

Instead of publishing content and hoping, you can double down on what actually produces leads - and improve the pages that get traffic but do not convert.

This ties in with the approach we’ve already taken on Nuhouse:

Web Design Meath: website fixes that increase enquiries
Homepage layout that converts for local service businesses

A quick Meath note (without turning off the rest of Ireland)

I always optimise locally in a way that doesn’t make the business look “Meath only”. The positioning is simple: based in Meath, serving clients across Ireland. You get the local ranking advantage without limiting your appeal.
